THE MENTAL SIDE OF SPORTS
PHOENIX, AZ - We all carry vivid pictures of athletes
who choke, ones who are unable to deliver in clutch
situations. Weekend athletes, too, experience those
frustrating moments of being unable to play as well
as they know they can--the easy shot muffed when the
friendly game is on the line. Both choking and heightened
performance when an athlete shines show that mental
skills play a role in sports performance.
The newly released Visualization: The Master Skill In
Mental Training (Optimal Performance Institute, $14.95)
presents the mental skills and strategies associated
with top athletic performance. Written as a training
manual for athletes, the booklet gives specific exercises
and guidelines for developing the skill of visualization,
the master skill in mental training.
"This guide helps athletes develop visualization
skills just the way I would assist them as a consultant,"
says the author, Marie Dalloway, a specialist in performance
enhancement training for athletes. "The greats
in sports follow a set of mental processes that allow
them to produce excellent results consistently. Any
athlete can lift the level of his or her game by learning
the key mental skill of visualization."
The booklet takes the reader through a series of exercises
in the use of visualization for confidence building,
for mentally rehearsing upcoming competitive events,
and for overcoming problem areas in performance.
Marie Dalloway, Ph.D., Director of the Optimal Performance
Institute, has done presentations for top-level athletes,
including the U.S. Biathlon Team, the Women's World
Championship Judo Team, the Men's World Championship
Judo Team, and Leslie Deniz, the silver medalist in
the Women's Discus. She has done mental training programs
with coaches and athletes at the Olympic Training Centers
in Lake Placid, New York, and in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Portions of a mental training program she did were nationally
televised by ABC Olympic Sports Coverage.
